Lauren. 24. On the fence about just about everything.
Okay, did I LOVE watching tribal council last night? Yes. Perfect Survivor type of twist. But-
Did the moment when Malcolm found a second idol convince me that Survivor is at least partially staged? Yes. Yes yes yes damnit. Survivor is (was?) struggling with ratings and Malcolm was a big viewer grabber last season.
Let’s not even get into the fact that out of 4 hidden idols this season, Malcolm and Reynold have each found 2, with Reynold’s second coming the day after he played the first, during a stretch of tribals where the idols were the only thing keeping him from being voted out …
Ahhh I don’t know. I love Survivor and I want to believe it’s all real, and I naturally want to provide counterarguments for myself. Maybe they’re the only ones looking / maybe other players are actively avoiding idols and the attention/threat that comes with them.
In other news, #MermaidBrenda had too many good moments in one week for me not worry for her or not start cheering for her a little bit.
I never watched her first season(s?) and her screen time thus far has been negligible, so I was trying to pretend that I wasn’t already cheering for her because she’s cute and level-headed. Then she rocked it in back to back challenges, and was the only one to go help Dawn out (…yeah, wtf rest of the tribe? “Hm why is she crying like a wounded animal? That’s weird let’s all stand and awkwardly comment about why she might be making that noise”)
Then in tribal she turned on Andrea so fast it made my head spin
and kind of turned me on. Although on rewatching, it looks like Phillip makes the decision and whispers it to her, and she is just passing it on to Dawn.
I actually think Phillip played the situation very well. Stealth-R-Us was literally at the breaking point because, if the hidden immunity idols are seen as definite, then the 7 have to vote for each other, which makes them watch their own alliance turn on itself, and makes it hard to pick up the pieces the next day, when all the immunity idols are gone and there are still 6 stealth members to 3 amigos.
*On rewatch: credit here actually goes to Eric, who points out that the hidden idols aren’t played until after the vote. Phillip was sputtering and caught up in personal offense to Malcolm’s calculated statements about him, but he rallies around Eric’s point pretty swiftly.
Phillip saying “just keep the vote the way it was and if it comes down to it I’ll go home” takes away the need for the other Stealth members to think about who they’d turn on first, and who would turn on them, while also compelling Malcolm and Eddie to actually play their idols, rather than trying to ride the threat of them through another week or two.
Was it a good move for Phillip personally? Meh. It hugely calmed the panic that was overtaking his alliance at that moment, but, if he hadn’t said it, maybe Stealth would still have stuck to their votes and Malcolm, not feeling as threatened, would have tried to skate through without playing the idol. Or Brenda might have been able to push an Andrea-assassination through
Was it a good move for the alliance? Hell yeah. What I see in next week’s previews is the amigos still trying to break into Stealth by courting “outsiders.” What I saw a few seconds before Phillip (/*Eric) spoke up was every member of Stealth-R-Us trying to figure out whose throat to cut.
I was ready for Phillip to go home a few weeks ago because I was vaguely cheering for Michael but my opinion of him went up very significantly in the couple minutes before he left (meanwhile in the jury, Michael was rocking out to this twist like it was a song. I loved it)
Omg Corinne you blew it in so many ways tonight. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU.
A) Yours and Malcom’s alliance waiting til next week to make a move - WHY? You have 6 votes not counting Sherri. Why not approach her? Is she too risky to approach because she might blab to the favorites? Then-
B) WHY YOU TALK TO DAWN?!?!
C) And most importantly - WHY THE FRICK WOULD YOU TALK PHILLIP OUT OF SPLITTING THE VOTES? You’re only voting Sherri off this week so that your 6 is a majority. You know what else makes your 6 a majority? THE OTHER MAJOR BLOCK SPLITTING THEIR FLIPPING VOTES.
I’m so mad.
Edit* because I’m also finding it interesting that Malcolm is spearheading this whole plot as much as (read: actually more) than Corinne but comes out completely unscathed.
