People probably wonder why I spam them about Bomb Girls every week. Here’s why:

BOMB GIRLS is a show set at a 1940s munitions factory, and just to cut to the fandom chase let me say that you can’t really slash the dudes because the dudes don’t do much, but it is femmeslashy as fuck and if you really wanted you could genderswap the characters or use them as a basis for your original fic because they are awesome, but honestly that defeats the very point of Bomb Girls which is all about showing you a bunch of women who by the end of the first season you would seriously slit throats for, full stop.

It has perfect period clothes for everyone, but at least one major terrible element (more on that later) and the dialogue is kind of stilted. If you are like me, i.e., not alive in the forties, you can just pretend that people talked like that back then. You might have some problems if you are one of those brainiac elderly people who can use computers like a BAMF, in which case you should watch the show anyway for nostalgia purposes because Bomb Girls is set in an alternate-reality 1940s Canada that is suspiciously like the one we (or I guess those of us who are from Canada) were all taught about except that everybody in it is either 1. Kind of a lesbian or 2. Into Gladys Witham. Or both.

Since it’s the 40s, most of the men are off Nazi-fighting, and they can’t do that without bombs, so the women make bombs. Simple. Except that since it’s the 40s, lots of people make sure to point out that this doesn’t make women soldiers, that they’re only working to make up for the men being gone, and that when the war’s over they’ll all get married.

“The Blank Tape”

Simón Martínez presses his nose against the TV’s monitor, his hot breath fogging the glass, as he tries to position his face as close to the television screen as humanly possible.

He remembers doing this during his bored moments as a child, thinking he may find something secret being broadcast that he’d miss if he was watching from the couch like a regular person.

The static fills the screen with its never-ending frenetic dance, never stopping to stay still even for a moment. Simón focuses on just one black or white dot, trying to track its trail as it hops wildly across the screen, but each time he loses the poor thing as the rest of the static overwhelms it.

Having found this blank VHS tape in an ancient box that he forgot he ever had, Simón hoped there was some sort of lost treasure from his childhood recorded on the cassette… but nope. Just static. He guesses he was saving it to record something special, something special that never came.

But still, for whatever reason, he actually likes it this way. The static is somehow soothing, filling his field of vision with the endless movement while the white noise quietly hisses on and on.

The magnetic tape inside the cassette *snaps*, and Simón hears the gears of the VCR grind to a halt as it struggles to eject the broken VHS. The picture goes black.

Simón unwinds the magnetic tape from around the VCR’s reels, the strip crinkling in his hands, and throws the useless blank tape away.
